Rioja is undoubtedly the most important wine region in Spain and one of only two areas to have attained the highest classification of Spanish wine. The Tempranillo grape variety is king here, offering ripe plum and red berry flavours. The grape also has an affinity for oak, so there is a long tradition for ageing Rioja wines in barrels to add a lovely smoky and toasty flavour complexity to the best wines.
